Sending swishing sounds through the cavities of my ears, The ocean lulls me to a deep serenity. I dip my masked face into its shallow waters off of Cozumel’s 7 mile beach. I gaze at the tiny fish that swim as one, Their mass surrounding me in a greeting unlike any other. Gently, so gently, I push through them. I enter the reef. The large grains of sand give way to the immense rock. A smaller school of larger fish swish and swim away from me. I breathe softly through my snorkel. Fingering the rock, A tiny flatfish suddenly appears and Glides away from my hand. I continue floating, Watching small fishes watching me, And catch sight of something alien-white. Waving in the water, cracked on one side, Was a plastic cup in the sea. I collected it. Going on, I peer into the small, cave-like places between rocks. Sea urchins, the first I’ve ever seen, Hid black in the shadows. I swim but five feet from them And find a plastic bag dancing in the ocean’s breeze. I collected it. An angelfish, probably a foot tall and colorful, Pecks at a rock unoccupied by urchins. Wary of me, it darts into its cave before venturing back out for its lunch. I pass slowly, over a small rock and spiky urchin, To find a hair tie lying on a rock. I collected it. In an hour’s venture I saw at least twenty kinds of creatures, Found five kinds of rocks, And collected ten pieces of trash. The main purpose of this poem is to emphasize the importance of actually throwing away your trash. When people litter, most of it ends up in our oceans, destroying the mysterious ecosystem that we rely on. However, underneath the poem, we can see that most of the trash identified was recyclable. These materials, rather than suffocating a critter, can be used for useful things such as grocery bags and the like.
