With the smooth beat of rap and the melodic patterns of indie rock, Kid Cudi captures his listeners in the feel-good sound of “Pursuit of Happiness.” Yes, while the song opens with the rolling of a joint, it continues on in a much more agreeable manner. In fact, it gives a message that is quite agreeable: “I’m on the pursuit of happiness and I know/ Everything that shine ain’t always gonna be gold, hey/ I’ll be fine once I get it, yeah.” Essentially, the song is talking about the “end of the tunnel.” After going through a rough patch of life, there is time to enjoy your happiness. It is those moments that you should live for. Forget “the trials of tomorrow,” he says. This is when you need to just relax, take a breath. “Everything that shines ain’t always gonna be gold”: You may be on the path that is the best out there, but you’re still going to hit a dark patch of mud. That’s just life. What matters is that you enjoy life in general. “If I fall, if I die, know I lived it to the fullest / If I fall, if I die, know I lived and missed some bullets.” Even though it’s rough in the world, you can enjoy the little things. You CAN live life to its fullest. It’s just a matter of trying. Many of you, I know, are probably asking why on earth I wrote this. In truth, I've had a rough couple of weeks. My family is not the happiest, magazine-friendly family (who's is?) and going back to public school has been a bit of a frenzy. I also have to move in less than a week and I can't find anything that I probably already packed. Luckily, I have a fantastic group of friends and music to help me through it all. For my friends that are reading this, thank you. You have no idea how much really are doing for me. Just like the song "Pursuit of Happiness," you don't really know what is going on. In fact, it's just the surface. But I thank you anyway. Over and out,
